History of floating

The beggining of floatation tanks can be found in the 1950 when dr. John C. Lilly, psychoanalyst and expert for experimental neuropsychology, with his partner neuropsychiatrist dr. Jay Shurley has wanted to research the origin of the conscious activity in human brain. They have tried to build the system which will more practicaly limited the influences from the enviroment. So they built the first, still >very primitive< floatation tank that was improved during the years.

Floatation REST (Restricted Enviromental Stimulation Technique) is a relaxing lying in salty water in a completely calm and pleasant enviroment.
The floatation tank is made of poliester, so that no influences from the enviroment such as light, sound and gravitation can reach the inside.
Big amount of Epsom salt, which is dissolved in the water, create the perfect floatation eviroment. The water solution is heated on 35.5 Co. All this elements help create the enviroment in which we can simply and fast reach the feeling of relaxation and well-being. The floatation tank can be used for several purposes; for perfect relaxation, against the stress, in medical purposes, to improve sports achivements, for learning .
Floatation tank, made by Dr. Lilly, was not used only by neurologiest on Faculty of Medicine, but also other scientists from different fields have showed the interest for the tank and its effects on human body and thoughts.
In 1982 due to a bigger interest and research, they have established the International REST Investigators Society - IRIS. The purpose of the IRIS is to enable the communication net, which will be accessible to research workers and all others that are interested in REST and to organize the international REST conferences which will take place every 3 years. All the researches which were represented on the conferences are also published in a book.
